MES GT Nomination Timeline 22-23

November 28 – December 16: Students take the Cognitive Abilities Test - CogAT and, as needed, the Naglieri Nonverbal Abilities Test – NNAT. Murchison Elementary is scheduled to complete testing from November 28th - December 14th. 

November - December: Nominated students and their teachers select pieces of schoolwork to be placed in a Gifted & Talented Nominee Portfolio. The teacher will select 4-8 pieces and the student (guided by the teacher) will select 1-2 pieces, for a total of 5-10 pieces of student work. Teachers complete SIGS School Rating Scales and collect portfolios for each nominated student.

January 2023: Parents complete and turn in Home SIGS English/Home SIGS Spanish. Parents are invited to select 1-2 pieces of student work to be placed in the Gifted & Talented Nominee Portfolio. This is optional – if you choose to include work, please attach a complete Portfolio Selection Insight Form to the work. This work may be completed at school or at home and should provide evidence of ability or interest in the content area(s) being screened. In addition, this work must be completed independently, so we ask that parents not guide, suggest, or direct. The portfolio piece(s) and form are due to the school counselor by January 20th. Paper copies will be sent home by the second week of January. 

January 17 – January 31: Nominated students will be interviewed by a GT identification committee.

By March 1st:  Kindergarten parents will be notified of their child’s Gifted and Talented Identification results and identified students will begin receiving services. 

By May 1st: First - Fifth grade parents will be informed of their child’s Gifted and Talented Identification results, including any CogAT and NNAT score reports by this date. Services will begin the following school year, 2023-2024.
